Trip to the beach

On Monday 19th November, me and my geography class took a trip to the beach around drogheda. It was very cold and windy on the beach, But we still conducted our experiments. We were given sheets and clipboards to take down information. Our equipment included red and white metre poles, rulers, angle measuring devices and a bag of oranges.Related image

“the tide was much farther out on the particular day we visited”

Our first activity was drawing a rough sketch of the beach and its distinctive features. The second thing we did was plant two meter poles into the ground on elevated ground and on the ground floor.

After that we measured the length apart the poles were, and measured the angles the poles were at dependant on height. After that we travelled up the beach and threw 2 quadrants and recorded what was inside them. Inside the first was 7 small smooth stones, while the second contained seaweed and shells because it was closer to sea.

Finally,, we had two people throw ball size oranges into the sea to experiment long shore drift.

Thats all for today. Bye!

Crime in geography : Amazon rain forest

Today i learned about the crimes committed in the amazon rain forest ,mainly illegal deforestation without permits etc.Image result for amazon forest

The amazon rain forest is located in south america, located between Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Columbia and Venezuela.

The deforestation of the amazon is causing wildlife to run out of places of habitat to stay in which will cause many problems with future extinctions. The main difficulty of this situation is that the amazon supplies a large amount of the trees on the planet, which, as known are one of the earths most sustainable method of producing oxygen. If we continue to break laws and cut down trees illegally we are going to run out of trees and ultimately, Oxygen.

Another thing i learned today was the growth and smuggling of heroin and other opiates into the UK from Afghanistan, Which is currently one of the largest growers of opium across the planet.

Crime in geography 2: Fear of crime

Today i gained knowledge of the fear of crime in different areas and the factors influencing it in geography.Image result for criminal activity

Fear of crime is what the public and medias perspective of crime and how its done. Examples include messes, rubbish strewn, graffiti, security cameras and warning signs. These make people feel uneasy and worried about surrounding area crime.

  • Messy streets and strewn rubbish may mean unkempt, poorer areas, which are prime spots for muggings and theft.
  • Graffiti is a sign the local council doesn’t care about the area and may mean less less law enforcement comes through that area. may also correlate with gang activity.
  • CCTV and security cameras are signs of nearby crime and warning signs are signs of local burglary etc.

These are some of the many factors of fear of crime
